Our story

The strength of our collection lies as much in what we leave out as what we bring in.

We began with a simple conviction: that Italian design deserved more than a price tag and a place on a showroom floor.

The right piece changes more than the way a room looks. It changes how the space is experienced, every day.

Since 2001, we’ve travelled to Italy to build relationships with some of the country’s most respected furniture houses, introducing collections chosen for the way Southern African homes are lived in. Today, every brand represented by Maldini is exclusive to our showroom.

All brands are exclusive to Maldini.

Our Edit holds a
high standard

Thousands of Italian pieces get produced and marketed to showrooms every year.

Many are beautifully designed. Few have the presence, craftsmanship and longevity to justify becoming part of someone’s space for decades.

Those are the pieces we go looking for.

We travel to Italy to meet the people behind them. To understand how they’re made, how they age, how they feel to live with, and why they deserve a place in our Edit. We travel to Italy to find them. We get close to the visionaries behind them and the makers – how a drawer opens, how the leather feels under your hand and looks ten years later in a busy living room.

The people behind The Edit

LEAD CURATOR

Simone Blumberg

For more than two decades, Simone has worked closely with Italy’s leading furniture houses, selecting collections for Southern African homes.

She oversees every piece Maldini brings to market, building long-standing relationships with the designers and manufacturers behind each brand while working alongside homeowners, architects and interior designers locally.

She still travels to Milan every year, asking the same questions: What will this add to the way someone lives? How will it look ten years from now?

OPERATIONS MANAGER

Thomas Hill

What interests or inspires you about Italian design, furniture, or interiors?

Italian design treats furniture as something made to be lived in for generations. Form, function and emotion all have to work together in one piece. The attention to detail is what sets it apart, from the solid wood and natural leathers to the artisanal techniques.

Is there a Maldini brand, designer, or product that particularly resonates with you, and why?

Porada, without a doubt. Last year I was chosen to visit the Porada factory in Italy, and I’m grateful for that. Their woodwork, especially in solid Canaletta walnut, makes every piece feel like artwork.

The homes we remember are rarely defined by how much they cost. They’re remembered for how they make us feel.

Some decisions can’t be made from a screen

The weight of solid walnut. The softness of leather. The way natural light changes a finish throughout the day. The scale of a dining table within a room. These are the details that photographs can never fully capture.

Our Kramerville showroom gives you the opportunity to experience the collections in person, with guidance from one of our Curators.
