Made in Italy is only half the story.

4 October 2026

Italian furniture arrives with a particular kind of pedigree. Generations of craftsmanship, an extraordinary understanding of materials, and a design culture that has produced some of the most recognisable furniture in the world.

But good design is ultimately tested somewhere much less glamorous: at home.

A dining table has to work on an ordinary Tuesday as well as it does when twelve people arrive for lunch. A sofa has to survive the way a family actually uses it. An occasional chair that looked extraordinary in Milan still needs to make sense in a Johannesburg living room, a Cape Town apartment or a home in the Winelands.

At Maldini, this has shaped the way we have selected Italian furniture for Southern Africa for more than two decades.

The Italian part.

Italy’s relationship with furniture is difficult to separate from its relationship with making.

Across the brands we represent, that shows up differently. Porada has built its reputation around woodworking and an exceptional command of solid timber. Cattelan Italia combines materials such as steel, glass and ceramic with technically complex forms. Incanto comes from the upholstery tradition of southern Italy. Qeeboo brings a completely different Italian instinct to the collection, working with internationally recognised designers to turn furniture and lighting into objects with humour, character and surprise.

There isn’t one Italian aesthetic. What connects the best Italian furniture is the degree of consideration behind it: how materials meet, how a table carries its weight, how a sofa is constructed beneath the upholstery, how proportion changes the way a piece feels in a room.

Then it has to live here.

Southern African homes have their own rhythm.

We entertain generously. Dining tables often need to accommodate more than the immediate family. Living areas open onto terraces and gardens. Natural light can be strong. Rooms can be expansive, particularly in contemporary residential architecture, and furniture needs the right scale without simply becoming bigger and heavier.

This changes what we look for. We consider how a piece will sit within the architecture around it, how its materials will work in the space and how it will be used once it gets there.

Sometimes that means a Cattelan Italia dining table whose structure gives definition to a large open-plan room. Sometimes it is the material depth of Porada against harder architectural surfaces. Sometimes a Qeeboo object introduces exactly the element of play a more restrained interior needs.

The furniture comes from Italy. The decision about what belongs here happens here.

A showroom is only the beginning.

Furniture is unusually difficult to judge in isolation.

A sofa can be beautifully made and still be wrong for the proportions of a particular room. A dining table can be the right length but leave too little space around it once the chairs are pulled out. Two individually exceptional pieces can compete when they are placed together.

This is why we think of curation as more than selecting good furniture. It is understanding the relationship between pieces: scale, material, shape and colour, what is already in the room and what still needs to be added.

It is also why we encourage clients to spend time with furniture before deciding. Sit in the chair. Extend the table. Move around it. Look at the joinery. Feel the upholstery. See what happens to a finish as the light changes.

These are pieces people will live with for years. They are worth taking the time to choose properly.

Made in Italy.
Lived here.

For 24 years, Maldini has travelled to Italy, worked directly with Italian furniture houses and selected collections for the Southern African market.

That experience has changed the way we look at furniture. We look at where and how a piece was made, the materials and craftsmanship behind it, its proportions, and how it will work in the room it is being chosen for.

But the real test begins once it leaves the showroom. Because the best furniture doesn’t just look right when it arrives. It continues to feel right years later.
